The Story of Ruth

 The Book of Ruth teaches that genuine love at times may require uncompromising sacrifice. Regardless of what this life brings us, we can live according to the precepts of God. Genuine love and kindness will be rewarded. 
God abundantly blesses those who seek to live obedient lives. God extends mercy to the merciful.

Judges

The book of Judges takes up where the book of Joshua left off. The Israelites are in the Promised Land, and they’ve started to take over the land.

Compromise, a serious problem with people today, is one of the main themes of Judges. When the Israelites failed to completely drive out the wicked nations in Canaan, they left themselves open to their influences—chiefly idolatry and immorality. God used the oppressors to punish the Jews. The Jews' disloyalty to him had painful consequences, but they repeated the pattern of falling away many times. 

Joshua

Claim the Victory
The Book of Joshua provides an overview of the military campaigns to conquer the land area that God had promised. Following the exodus from Egypt and the forty years of the wilderness wanderings, the newly-formed nation is now ready to enter the Promised Land, conquer the inhabitants, and occupy the territory.


"After the death of Moses the servant of The Lord, The Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' aide: "Moses My servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them - to the Israelites.  I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates - all the Hittite country - to the Great Sea on the west. No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life.

Deuteronomy the second book of the Law

A new generation of was about to enter the Promised Land. This multitude had not experienced the miracle at the Red Sea or heard the law given at Sinai, and they were about to enter a new land with many dangers and temptations. Moses began this first “sermon” by reviewing God’s faithfulness to Israel. God had been faithful in bringing the nation from Sinai to her present location, and by giving her victory over her enemies. He also reminded the people of the future blessings that they could anticipate.

Book of Numbers 

Take a census of the whole community of Israel by families and households. List every man by name 

This book takes its name from the fact that it contains the account of the two census of the congregation of Israel. The original Hebrew title, "in the wilderness," is greatly to be preferred, as the book is certainly more a vital history of the events of the period of wanderings than a catalogue of statistics.

Genesis reveals how people can have a relationship with God. This comes through trust in God and obedience to Him. Faith is the key word in Genesis. God proves He Is faithful in this book.

Exodus reveals that God is also sovereign. He is the ultimate ruler of the universe. The sovereign God provided redemption for people so they could have an even deeper relationship with Him. Man’s response should be worship and obedience.

Because the Israelites had been held captive in Egypt for 400 years, the concept of God had been distorted by the polytheistic, pagan Egyptians.

Exodus

Reading Exodus Chapters 1-5, 12-14 and 20

These are the names of the sons of Israel (that is, Jacob) who moved to Egypt with their father, each with his family:  Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, 

Zebulun, Benjamin,  Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.  In all, Jacob had seventy descendants in Egypt, including Joseph, who was already there.  In time, Joseph and all of his brothers died, ending that entire generation.  But their descendants, the Israelites, had many children and grandchildren. In fact, they multiplied so greatly that they became extremely powerful and filled the land.

Jobs struggles and the Divine Speeches

God inspired this book to reveal answers to questions that arise from God’s nature and His ways with human beings. Specifically, what is the basis on which God deals with people? Elsewhere in the Old Testament we find God typically repaying good with good and evil with evil, but that is not how He dealt with Job.

“How can a God who elsewhere in Scripture is described as the very essence of love and grace initiate or even allow suffering in the lives of His saints? How can His attributes be reconciled with His actions, especially when those actions appear to run counter to all He claims to be?”  “The book of Job deals essentially with man’s relationship with God, centering on two questions. The first question is, Why does man worship God? . . .“The second question is, How will man react to God when God seems unconcerned about his problems?

Note on The Many Psalms

Various authors from King David, Solomon, Moses, Asaph, Ethan to the sons of Korah. Some do not indicate who the author was. Ancient song book with praises, prayers and complaints to God. 

Of all the books in the Old Testament the Book of Psalms most vividly represents the faith of individuals in the Lord. The Psalms are the inspired responses of human hearts to God’s revelation of Himself in law, history, and prophecy. Saints of all ages have appropriated this collection of prayers and praises in their public worship and private meditations.

Note on Chapter 11

The earth was of one language and one speech. The decedents of Shem wanted to build a city for them selves to make a name for themselves. They built a city and tower as to reach higher than the heavens~ This was not an act of worship, but rather an act of pride.  We are to reflect the ways of the Lord and not of ourselves.

And the LORD came down to see the city and tower that the children of men built.  The LORD spoke and confounded their language so that they may not understand one another's speech, and he scattered them over the face of the earth.

From Adam to Noah &  God’s Grief over Humankind’s Wickedness (Gen 6-9) 

Imagine the sadness of our God as so many turned their hearts away from him and continued in their wicked ways.  The Lord is a Holy, righteous and merciful God.  When the people continued to disobey and went unto their own ways, God determined to destroy the human race with the exception of those few people to whom He extended grace.

Introduction

Each book of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Old Testament, called the Torah [instruction] by the Jews) originally received its title in the Hebrew Bible from the first word or words in the book. There are three divisions in the Hebrew Bible: The Law (Torah), the Prophets, and the Writings. The Torah was originally one book, but the Septuagint divided it into the five books that we have. The Jews regarded the stories in the Torah as divine instruction for them, as well as the commandments and sermons, since they too teach theology and ethics.  MORE ON THIS as my study continues.... 

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1-18

In the last few verses of the prologue to his gospel, John identifies the Word... Who was in the beginning with God, and was God. Through whom all things were made. Who was life, and the light of men. Who came into the world, though many did not receive Him Yet those who received Him, were given the right to become children of God The Word was Jesus Christ... Who became flesh and lived among men Whose glory was seen by men The word "glory" as used here means "majesty, dignity, splendor" (Barnes)  Pertaining to Christ, it refers to His personal excellence or majesty
