Galatians Week 2 Day 1

S - [My precaution was] because of false brethren who had been secretly smuggled in [to the Christian brotherhood]; they had slipped in to spy on our liberty and the freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might again bring us into bondage [under the Law of Moses].

To them we did not yield submission even for a moment, that the truth of the Gospel might continue to be [preserved] for you [in its purity]. (AMP)

O/A – Another reason Paul went up to Jerusalem. Evidently, the false teachers had entered Paul’s arena of ministry representing themselves as true Christians. But they opposed what Paul had taught. Their intent was to bring Paul and all other preachers and hearers of the true gospel into bondage by imposing circumcision as a condition for salvation. Paul did not condemn circumcision as if it were a sin to receive it – circumcision had no bearing upon salvation and was therefore not to be forced upon the Gentiles. The liberty to which Paul referred is not freedom in the abstract, but a liberty that believers have in Christ Jesus.

The Spirit of grace, who is the Holy Spirit is not about what we get away with but what we get to enjoy because of our new found right-standing with the father! He teaches us to say ‘no’ to sin, because children of God do not act that way. He reminds us of who we are! Paul did the same thing, he spoke of who we are in order to help us realize we can overcome sin. In the church at Corinth there was so much glory and sin in one place, Paul lists the sins of the past and then he says ‘And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.’ (1Corinthians 6:11)

It is out of knowing and meditating on who we now are in Christ that we become like him. The enemy has always tried to distort our identity in order to bring us under the bondage of sin, he did that with Adam and Eve, he distorted the character of God, by implying that he was withholding something good from them, and who they already were by saying ‘you will become like God, if you eat from this tree’. The problem is they had forgotten that they already were like God, because they were made in his image.

P – Father, I thank you and praise you for your word. As you work in us as we meditate and study, Lord help us to always remember not to take our freedom / liberty in Christ for granted, that we reverence you and Honor you always. In Jesus’ name, Amen
